Which hardware can you buy old, and which should you never skimp on?

To be honest, looking at the PC market in 2026, Xiaolei really feels like there's been a temporal dislocation.

In June, AMD released the 10th-anniversary edition of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. To be honest, I didn't expect this CPU to re-enter our view (I mean, its initial release was back in 2022).

Of course, even four years later, the 5800X3D remains a solid gaming CPU. Considering the exorbitant prices of DDR5, its cost-effectiveness is quite high.

Even stranger is the resumption of production for the RTX 3060, originally released in 2021, which is now re-entering some markets. Some of you might have been sophomores in high school when it was released, and now you're probably college graduates. And then Xiaolei realizes, hey, after five years, the entry-level graphics card I can still afford is still the 3060. Surprising, isn't it? Unexpected, right?

We used to say: When it comes to digital products, buy new, not old. But in 2026, that might not necessarily be true. The variety of CPU and GPU models on the market today is a mess, leaving most people bewildered. Take the classic example: Which has better performance, the RTX 5050 or the RTX 3060? Which offers a better gaming experience?

If you're looking to buy a computer in this 'PC chaos' but don't want to spend too much time researching chip performance comparisons, just keep reading. Without further ado, let's start with desktops.

In Xiaolei's view, CPUs are actually one of the PC hardware components best suited for 'buying old.' The Ryzen 7 5800X3D mentioned earlier is a perfect example.

While it still uses the Zen 3 architecture and AM4 socket, its 96MB L3 cache, 8 cores and 16 threads, and a maximum boost clock of 4.5GHz still deliver excellent performance in online gaming scenarios. AMD's decision to restart production of this CPU in 2026 essentially reflects the large existing inventory of AM4 motherboards and DDR4 memory in the current PC market, making it a great choice for most budget-conscious users.

Of course, if someone tells you there's not much difference between the 5800X3D and the 9800X3D, they're definitely trying to mislead you. After all, four years of architectural updates and process node improvements aren't just for show. While both have 8 cores and 16 threads, the 9800X3D can reach a maximum boost clock of 5.2GHz and supports overclocking, along with many improvements in heat dissipation and other issues.

Theoretically, with the same graphics card, the difference in gaming frame rates between the two could exceed 20%, and in some games, it might even reach over 50% (mainly online games). However, this situation generally arises when graphics card performance is no longer the bottleneck. For example, if your monitor resolution is 1080P, but your graphics card is a 5090 or 5080 level, then the CPU performance gap becomes significant. But if your resolution is 2K or 4K, the impact of the CPU on frame rates diminishes again.

So, if your budget is limited and you're not a hardcore 1080P FPS online gamer, consider buying a previous or even earlier generation CPU and allocate more of your budget to the graphics card. Let me put it this way: Even 13th and 14th-gen Core CPUs can meet the performance demands of most current games.

But GPUs aren't so fortunate. While Nvidia's 'precision knife skills' have always been a topic of jokes, and some netizens argue that the theoretical performance gains of graphics cards in recent years haven't been significant, DLSS really does 'work wonders.' Each generation of ray-tracing cores and Tensor Cores brings substantial performance improvements, so in actual use, the frame rate differences are far greater than what the paper specs suggest.

Take the RTX 3060 12GB, which has re-entered the market, as an example. Its biggest advantage is its 12GB of VRAM, which does offer some benefits over 8GB options like the 4060 and 5050 at 2K resolution. However, this doesn't necessarily translate to a significant frame rate advantage.

In ComputerBase's actual testing, at 1080P resolution, the RTX 3060 managed around 50fps in Alan Wake 2, while the RTX 5060 achieved 77.1fps, a difference of over 50%. Even compared to the 4060, the frame rate difference was 10fps. And the much-maligned 5050 by many netizens still managed 58fps, almost identical to the 4060.

Testing across more than a dozen popular AAA titles and online games from the past two years leads to a clear conclusion: When it comes to graphics cards, buy new, the newer the better. The improvements brought by DLSS are truly substantial and cannot be compensated for by configurations like VRAM.

Especially for those with very limited budgets, my personal advice is to bite the bullet and go for the RTX 5050 or 5060 rather than opting for the cheaper 3060 (which, abstractly enough, isn't exactly cheap due to its larger VRAM capacity). As for mid-range to high-end graphics cards, there's even less need to discuss—each generation typically sees significant differences. Just stick to your budget and aim for the latest generation as much as possible.

So, the desktop PC setup can be simply summarized as: Save on the CPU, splurge on the GPU. Using a CPU from the previous two generations is fine; for GPUs, the newer, the better. Of course, if you're open to buying used, you can also follow the logic of 'next-gen, high-end beats low-end.' For example, if a used 4070 costs 3200 and a new 5060 also costs 3200, the 4070 would be the better choice.

Considering that the back-to-school season is approaching, laptops are a necessity for many, and you're probably even more confused about which CPU and GPU to choose. To be honest, the differences between mobile and desktop platforms are significant. Unlike desktops, where multiple generations can coexist peacefully, on the mobile side, skipping a generation can feel like a chasm, depending on your needs.

Let's start with the simplest category: gaming laptops. The logic remains the same: The newer the GPU, the better. Especially on power-sensitive mobile platforms, newer GPUs generally offer better energy efficiency, resulting in better long-term performance sustainability and thermal management compared to their predecessors.

The CPU selection logic is very similar to that of desktops. Even 14th-gen Core CPUs have sufficient performance for gaming and rarely become a bottleneck for frame rates in most scenarios. So, when choosing a gaming laptop, just focus on the graphics card model; everything else is secondary.

However, if your needs extend beyond gaming, you'll need to reconsider. Take mobile productivity, for example. Intel's Core processors, from the 14th gen to the third-gen Core Ultra, have seen significant improvements in battery life with each generation. The performance gap when running on battery is particularly noticeable, and the third-gen Core Ultra's integrated graphics performance is also quite impressive, making it currently the most ideal CPU for ultrabook (ultrabooks).

However, third-gen Core Ultra models are quite expensive, so Xiaolei doesn't recommend them for students. Instead, I lean towards recommending configurations like Ryzen AI series + 5060 or Core Ultra 200 series + 5060 (or 5050 if budget is tight).

From past real-world testing, as long as you switch to integrated graphics + long battery life mode, you can generally achieve 6-8 hours of battery life, which is sufficient for students' daily class needs. There's no urgent need to opt for the latest models just for battery life.

Additionally, CPUs with superior multi-core performance are primarily found in the HX series, regardless of generation. From real-world testing, the current top performers are the Ultra 9 290HX Plus, followed by the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. Also making the list is the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which, despite its naming suggesting it belongs to the previous two years' Ryzen 7000 series, offers multi-core performance on par with the latest AI series.

So, for creative needs, first Lock (lock in) an HX-series CPU, then choose based on your budget, prioritizing Ryzen 9 7000 series and above or Core Ultra 7/9 200 series.

What about everyday use, no gaming, and no multi-core needs? Then it's simple: Avoid CPUs older than 13th-gen Core or Ryzen 7000 series, and you're good to go. Daily office tasks like creating spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations are a breeze. So, some ultrabooks released a year or two ago are actually the best choices now—their specs aren't outdated, but their prices are much better than the latest models.

In short, when choosing a laptop: For gaming laptops, focus on the GPU; for creative laptops, check if the CPU has an HX suffix; for office laptops, prioritize battery life with third-gen Core Ultra, or choose freely if battery life isn't a concern, just avoid 13th-gen Core, Core N, and Ryzen 5000 series.

It has to be said, this year's PC market is really tough, with significant impacts from hardware price hikes for both users and manufacturers. The former has to spend 30-50% more than in previous years to get similar configurations, while the latter faces a situation where many users are turning to used products or delaying purchases, causing market shipment expectations to plummet.

At least for this year, the old adage of 'buy new, not old' really can't be considered gospel. While new hardware does offer stronger performance, the price increases are also quite substantial, giving products like the 5800X3D, RTX 3060, and Ryzen 7000 series renewed competitiveness.

So, when buying a computer now, Xiaolei suggests not focusing too much on the chip's release year but rather on whether it meets your needs. As long as you don't blindly believe that 'newer is always better' and clarify your needs and budget, you can still find cost-effective products in this market of mixed old and new chips.
