New Energy Ascends, Fuel-Powered Vehicles Wane

Could it be true that among the top 10 car sales in July, there was merely one fuel-powered vehicle?

Recently, Dongchedi unveiled the July passenger car retail sales rankings, with the top 10 models listed as follows:

Notably, among these top 10 models, only one fuel-powered vehicle made the cut—the Corolla Cross, which secured the 8th position.

For comparison, in June's top 10 models, there were two fuel-powered contenders: the ninth-ranked Toyota Camry from GAC Toyota and the tenth-ranked Volkswagen Lavida from SAIC Volkswagen.

In May, the situation was even more stark, with no fuel-powered models breaking into the top 10 of the overall sales list. The highest-selling fuel-powered vehicle was the Geely Boyue L, which ranked 17th.

Judging by the July sales rankings, A0-grade pure electric vehicles, such as the Geely Starry Wish and Leapmotor A10, have usurped the positions previously held by A00-grade models, claiming the first and second spots in the current sales hierarchy, respectively.

Simultaneously, the Tesla Model Y, Xiaomi SU7, and Li Auto L6 continue to exhibit robust sales momentum, being the only three models among the top 10 priced above 200,000 yuan.

On the other hand, BYD has secured the most positions in the top 10 list, boasting three models: the Yuan UP, Dolphin, and Song Pro DM-i.

Recent sales rankings also reveal a gradual increase in the penetration rate of new energy vehicles, making it increasingly challenging for fuel-powered models to dominate the bestseller lists.

According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association, from April to June this year, the monthly sales share of new energy vehicles stood at 53.2%, 56.9%, and 58.5%, respectively.

In essence, the proportion of new energy vehicles among newly sold cars each month not only surpasses that of fuel-powered vehicles but is also on a continuous upward trajectory.

With ongoing technological advancements in new energy vehicles, particularly in terms of range, charging, and intelligence, it is anticipated that more individuals will opt for new energy vehicles as their primary car purchase in the future. Consequently, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles is poised to rise further.

Perhaps one day, when fuel-powered vehicles are entirely absent from the top 20 or even top 30 of the overall car sales rankings, one wonders what market share new energy vehicles will command and how the public will perceive fuel-powered vehicles then.
