By the end of 2023, there were more than 600 solar power generation projects utilizing CIGS power generation glass in operation in Bengbu City, with an annual power generation capacity of approximately 540 million kWh.
CIGS power generation glass is a type of thin-film solar cell made by coating a copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film on a glass substrate. It is composed of elements such as copper (Cu), indium (In), gallium (Ga), and selenium (Se). CIGS power generation glass has advantages such as high photoelectric conversion efficiency, excellent low-light performance, low production costs, relatively low preparation difficulty, low pollution, low temperature coefficient, low decay rate, attractive appearance, and strong adaptability. It can meet the needs of different application scenarios and can be used in both construction fields such as glass curtain walls and skylights, as well as embedded in electronic products.
As a building facade material, facade curtain wall panel material (such as industrial plant curtain walls), and roofing system panel, CIGS power generation glass has been successfully applied in construction projects. For example, in China, the Olympic Sports Center in the Chengnan New District of Bengbu City and the Memorial Hall Project in Nanshan Park both utilize CIGS power generation glass for power generation. By the end of 2023, there were more than 600 solar power generation projects utilizing CIGS power generation glass in operation in Bengbu City, with an annual power generation capacity of approximately 540 million kWh.
Internationally, according to the "2024-2029 China CIGS Power Generation Glass Industry Market In-Depth Research and Development Prospects Forecast Report" released by the Newthink Tank Industry Research Center, the Swedish Skellefteå Kulturhus, DHL Leipzig Headquarters, Saint-Gobain Office Building in France, Dutch National Archives in Amsterdam, and the German Sporthalle Grönau all use CIGS power generation glass as building curtain walls. Additionally, CIGS power generation glass is also used in scenarios such as electric vehicle and electric bicycle shelters.
However, globally, the CIGS power generation glass industry is still in its early stages of development, with a limited number of production enterprises in the industry. Among them, the main Chinese CIGS power generation glass production enterprise is China Sunergy Materials Co., Ltd. China Sunergy Materials Co., Ltd. has a production line capable of producing 2 million square meters of CIGS power generation glass annually, with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of up to 20.4%. Its products include not only standard power station products but also building materials that replace traditional exterior wall materials for buildings. In addition, Voltamp Technology, relying on China Sunergy's technology, uses CIGS power generation glass to provide tile-style and stone-style building materials.
Industry analysts from Newthink Tank stated that CIGS power generation glass is an ideal functional material for realizing the integration of photovoltaic and building structures. It has advantages such as being environmentally friendly, having adjustable and rich colors, high theoretical photoelectric conversion efficiency (up to 33.4%), and good low-light performance. It can be used in various scenarios such as public buildings, industrial buildings, commercial residences, office buildings, and agricultural greenhouses. In the future, driven by policies, there will be an increase in domestic and international projects using CIGS power generation glass to replace traditional exterior building materials, curtain wall materials, and roofing materials. Accordingly, the demand for CIGS power generation glass in China will also continue to increase.
