TechFast News, December 5th: According to media reports, Apple is collaborating with Baidu to add AI functionality to iPhones sold in the Chinese market. Both parties plan to launch the "Apple Intelligence" feature in China by 2025.
However, the collaboration has encountered obstacles, particularly disagreements on data privacy and usage.
Sources close to the matter revealed that Apple and Baidu engineers are jointly optimizing Baidu's large model to better meet the needs of iPhone users. However, the model is struggling to understand prompts and provide accurate responses to common scenarios posed by iPhone users.
Furthermore, there is a disagreement on whether iPhone user data should be used to train and improve the model.
Baidu wishes to retain and analyze data obtained from iPhone users making AI-related queries, while Apple's privacy policy strictly prohibits the collection of such data.
It is reported that Apple has paid up to $10 billion to use Baidu's AI model and agreed to bear the computational costs of retraining and fine-tuning the model to meet its requirements.
For Baidu, the biggest challenge lies in providing more relevant answers to questions that iPhone users may ask.
For instance, when an iPhone user requests "Apple Intelligence" to recommend a restaurant, Baidu's model may give an answer based on training data.
Apple, on the other hand, expects to provide more personalized answers based on the user's iPhone usage, such as downloaded apps, messaging history, and other activities.
