However, based on the latest update on the evening of July 28, the 'core' that powers numerous VR devices is on the brink of a substantial price hike, undoubtedly injecting fresh uncertainty into the consumer VR market, which is already grappling with cost challenges.

According to an email from Qualcomm to its customers last Friday, which was obtained by Bloomberg, the company intends to implement a double-digit percentage increase in chip prices starting from September 1, 2026. In the email, Qualcomm clarified that despite its diligent efforts to source alternative components from new supply channels, it can no longer shoulder the escalating costs from upstream suppliers. Bloomberg's analysis highlights that TSMC, as the global epicenter for outsourced chip manufacturing, has emerged as a critical bottleneck in the entire supply chain. Notably, Valve's highly anticipated Steam Frame headset, along with Pico's 'Project Swan' headset boasting an independent computing unit, and Meta's next-generation devices, are at the forefront of those affected.

For Valve, the pricing and exact release date of the Steam Frame remain undisclosed. Following the news of Qualcomm's price hike, concerns regarding its pricing strategy have intensified.
