A review of automakers' sales, net profits, and per-unit profits in the first half of 2024: Which is the strongest?

The sales and financial reports for the first half of 2024 are all out. So, which automaker do you think had the highest sales? Which had the highest net profits? And which had the highest per-unit profits? Let's take a look together!

Let's start with sales in the first half of 2024. SAIC Motor took the lead with 2.115 million vehicles sold, followed by BYD with 1.613 million, and Changan Automobile in third place with 1.3341 million. All top three automakers surpassed 1 million vehicles sold in the first half of 2024.

In terms of other automakers, Geely Group sold 955,700 vehicles, Guangzhou Automobile Group sold 860,000, Great Wall Motor sold 554,900, Beijing Automotive Group sold 476,000, Thalys sold 235,800, Lixiang One sold 189,000, and Jiangling Motors sold 159,700 in the first half of 2024.

Only Thalys and Lixiang One, the new forces in automobile manufacturing, made it to the list, while other automakers are still catching up.

Moving on to net profits in the first half of 2024, BYD led the way with RMB 13.631 billion, followed by Geely Group with RMB 10.598 billion, and Great Wall Motor in third place with RMB 7.079 billion. These are the top three automakers in terms of net profits for the first half of 2024.

Other automakers' net profits in the first half of 2024 include SAIC Motor with RMB 6.628 billion, Changan Automobile with RMB 2.832 billion, Beijing Automotive Group with RMB 1.978 billion, Lixiang One with RMB 1.692 billion, Thalys with RMB 1.625 billion, Guangzhou Automobile Group with RMB 1.516 billion, and Jiangling Motors with RMB 895 million.

Currently, the new forces in automobile manufacturing such as NIO, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and Nezha are still operating at a loss, with only Thalys and Lixiang One turning a profit.

Great Wall Motor had a per-unit profit of RMB 12,800, Geely Group had RMB 11,100, and Lixiang One had RMB 9,000 per unit.

Surprisingly, Great Wall Motor had the highest per-unit profit, significantly higher than BYD's RMB 8,500 despite BYD's higher sales and net profits.

Other automakers' per-unit profits in the first half of 2024 include Thalys with RMB 6,900, Jiangling Motors with RMB 5,600, Beijing Automotive Group with RMB 4,200, SAIC Motor with RMB 3,100, Changan Automobile with RMB 2,100, and Guangzhou Automobile Group with RMB 1,800.

Firstly, automakers with impressive sales performance in the first half of the year include SAIC Motor, BYD, and Changan Automobile, all exceeding 1 million vehicles sold. Secondly, in terms of net profits, BYD and Geely Group exceeded RMB 10 billion, demonstrating strong performance. Lastly, the automaker with the highest per-unit profits, which is of great concern to many, is Great Wall Motor, which, despite not having the highest sales, still managed to achieve impressive per-unit profits.
